hot and neutral reversed but wired correctly

Hot neutral reverse typically occurs when the hot wire, (it is supposed to be black) is attached to the neutral screw on the outlet. We are trying to ease into solar and currently have a 900 w 120v inverter with plans to upgrade to a 3000 w but still 120v as it seems all 240v inverters are very expensive. As stated above, when I got power from an outlet without the hot/neutral reversed yesterday, the controller hit its setpoint and the pump came on. Thanks.
